When you’re happy and feeling positive, you have an abundance of energy and stamina, you feel alive and your body hums along perfectly. But say you’re in a really bad situation like a divorce. This emotionally-charged situation is full of negative emotions like hate, anger, pain, guilt, frustration, jealousy, sadness, etc. – and if the situation persists and you don’t have a way to make yourself feel better, these emotions have a dramatic negative effect on your physical health (and your emotional and mental health as well). People who have gone through emotional trauma often age visibly in a very short time. Much of this is reversible – but only with a complete inner makeover.

You don’t have to go through a personal trauma for your emotions to affect your body, either! Everyday stuff can accumulate. Stress that isn’t released, stays in the body. Little annoyances and frustrations can, over time, weaken your body, if they are not dealt with but swept under the rug.

Every thought has a corresponding emotion and chemical response in the brain; so imagine the cumulative effects that a constant influx of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline have on your body!

But getting to know what’s inside the mind isn’t always easy. Life is busy. There isn’t a lot of time for introspection or sitting with yourself and getting to know the inner you.

To make the self-discovery process easier, the Silva Method has some exercises that help you quickly get into the right frame of mind that will help heal you emotionally and physically by identifying and transforming your thought habits.

Key to all Silva Method exercises is learning the ability to enter the alpha level, a slower, calmer state of brain activity. What’s the big deal about alpha? In alpha, you aren’t stressed, you are relaxed. Your thoughts aren’t racing, they are calm. Your emotions aren’t all over the place, they are centered. Your body isn’t on high alert, it’s relaxed and the brain is secreting healing, calming substances. You function with conscious awareness but in a state of mind that isn’t prone to stress. These benefits in and of themselves are pretty awesome, but you can also tune out distractions easily and focus your attention on your thoughts and emotions. You may notice that your thoughts are predominantly negative; and you may notice that as you relax into alpha, you release a tremendous amount of physical and emotional tension. This means that your body is suffering the effects of negative thinking/negative emotions!

You may not be thinking outwardly obvious negative thoughts that center around anger, hate or fear. They may be subtly negative. You may hear yourself thinking, “I can’t afford that,” or “I can’t do this.” These might seem like a simple statement of the facts – but in fact they go a lot deeper than that, and reflect your beliefs. If you’re aware of these types of thoughts, you can immediately change them for the better (you learn this sort of self-mastery in the Silva Method) and thus immediately change your physical state of being for the better.

Most of us habitually think negatively to some extent, and that network of thoughts is pretty widespread; so as you improve the quality of your thoughts, the changes in your body may be very subtle and you may not notice much for a long time… but things will definitely be on the upswing!

What about the body’s influence on the mind? That can be equally dramatic. Prolonged illness or health issues can leave you depressed, worried, scared, angry or resentful. And here again, the mental mastery you learn in the Silva Method will allow you the option to choose your response to your physical situation and stop that negative downward spiral.

Self-Discovery Exercises

One of the first exercises you learn is performing some Mental Housecleaning: recognizing that the thought you’re having is not beneficial to you, canceling the negative thought, and substituting it with a positive thought. This is something you can do very quickly any time you’ve got a negative thought. With practice, this is one method of imprinting more positive thoughts on your mind.

Another exercise that helps you see “what is” and create “what I want” is the Mirror  of the Mind exercise. The Mirror of the Mind uses imagination and visualization to change an existing situation and create a more desirable situation. This exercise is not only great for putting you in the right frame of mind to create the desirable situation, but it also helps you be more objective about your current state of your thoughts/beliefs/emotions.

Becoming self-aware is the most important part of self-discovery. Engaging in a journey of self-discovery can be uncomfortable if you come across some aspect of yourself that you don’t like. But don’t look at it in that light – instead, look at it as a very positive thing because it’s not really an aspect of YOU, it’s a manifestation of your past conditioning! You may have unconsciously and unwittingly adopted a belief that is ultimately detrimental to your health. And when you uncover it, you may have some resistance to letting it go – so remember, you didn’t choose that belief and so it doesn’t belong to you… and when you let it go, you promote better health and well-being.
