Sounds have the power to heal Have you ever wondered whether music can heal? After all, colors, light and touch are used, so why not music? Anyone who is healing from injury, sickness or disease, is probably stressed, worried and even frightened. If the patient’s mind is relaxed (stress dissipates) then the brain relaxes and secretes healing substances. Of course not just any music will do. Some music energizes, some soothes. Of all the musical treasures available, there is one that stands out as a healing superstar.

The Silva Method employs such a sound. It’s called the Alpha Sound, and it’s not music in the sense that it doesn’t have a melody; but for healing purposes, it’s far more effective than even the most soothing lullaby. The Alpha Sound is a repetitive, rhythmic sound that is specifically designed to entrain the brain into a slower brainwave activity to promote relaxation.

The brain naturally entrains with, or follows and synchronizes with, repetitive sounds. This phenomenon is called frequency following. Even before scientists discovered the benefits of brainwave entrainment, it has been used intuitively for many thousands of years to put people in a trance-like state of altered consciousness. From primitive drumming and chanting to the intense beats of a dance club, entrainment has been a part of humanity since the beginning. At a dance club, people begin to unconsciously sway to the beat almost immediately, and it’s been scientifically proven that the heartbeats of listeners actually begin to match the cadence of the music! The mind is also soothed or excited by the music used.

Since the mind/body connection is crucial to healing, it makes sense to put the brain into the state of activity where healing occurs. That state is the theta brainwave state.

In theta, the parasympathetic nervous system becomes dominant (in beta, the sympathetic nervous system is dominant) and the entire system goes into rest and repair mode.

When we’re stressed and the body is in fight-or-flight mode, the digestive system shuts down as the body’s energy goes into self-preservation mode. When we’re injured or suffering from disease, we can become highly stressed because of it. That means that essential nutrients aren’t being absorbed; not a problem when the stress is released and you return to a calm state; but unrelenting stress leaves the digestive system – and your health – compromised. The body is left just a little weaker with each episode of unreleased stress. Getting into the theta level, where the pa

rasympathetic nervous system is dominant, is beneficial for health maintenance.

You may be wondering if you spend enough time in theta during sleep. In normal sleep patterns, yes. The brain cycles through theta 4-6 times each night. But you don’t spend enough time in true relaxation if your sleep is interrupted due to stress – either you can’t fall asleep, don’t get enough sleep, or wake up frequently and can’t get back to sleep.
